A shooting on the campus of the Central University of North Carolina in Durham killed two people on Saturday night and locked a stadium full of fans.
Durham Police Department said two men were shot dead in the aboveground parking lot next to Latham parking lot on East Lawson Street.
The men were taken to hospital, where they died.
In a statement issued on Sunday afternoon, NCCU officials said the incident “involved people who were not part of the university community.”
âThere is no continuing threat to the campus,â NC Central said on Facebook.
Nearby O’Kelly Riddick Stadium, host of a home football game against Winston-Salem State at the time of the shooting, has been placed on lockdown.
For several hours, NCCU police and DPD agents evacuated the stadium and escorted people to their vehicles.
“It should be borne in mind that yesterday marked a huge return to NCCU football on our campus after two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” the university said on Sunday.
The News & Observer asked Durham Police if a motive or suspect had been determined and for more information on the two victims.
Police have asked those with information about the shooting to call Durham CrimeStoppers at 919-683-1200.
