DURHAM, NC (WNCN) – A large police presence was observed Saturday evening after two people were shot and killed at Central University of North Carolina in Durham.
The double shooting was reported just after 9 p.m. in a parking lot next to the NCCU parking lot on East Lawson and Lincoln streets, Durham Police said.
The two people who were shot were taken to a nearby hospital where they died, police said. NC Central officials later said the shooting did not involve the NCCU students.
Police then converged on the NC Central parking lot, setting up a crime scene tape at the intersection and not allowing anyone to enter inside. Hundreds of NCCU football fans, who parked in the garage ahead of a previous NC Central game, were not allowed access to their cars until 11:30 p.m.
The NC Central football match against Winston-Salem State University was underway at O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium at the time of the shooting.
At around 9:20 p.m. and with a few minutes remaining in the game, a stadium announcer told the crowd that they did not want anyone to leave the game due to a police situation on Lawson Street, according to a reporter from CBS 17 present during the match. NCCU officials later said the stadium was under lockdown.
Fans were then allowed to leave the stadium around 10:15 p.m.
