Cool Tools: Kitchen Scale

Today I am featuring a tool that I find myself using for knitting and spinning more and more frequently: a digital kitchen scale.

I didn’t break down and purchase this until I started spinning, but I have found it to be more useful than I expected for knitting projects as well.  Some of the basic yarny uses this scale serves for me include:

  • dividing unspun fiber evenly so I end up with equal amounts on the bobbins for plying
  • dividing skeins of yarn evenly so I have equal amounts for mittens, socks, gloves or those patterns that call for “holding two strands together”
  • calculating how much yarn I have used so far on a project or how much I have left (helpful if you are worried you might run out so you can adjust accordingly)

All this and it is helpful in the kitchen too, especially for baking.

My model (pictured) is Escali brand and I purchased it on Amazon.com.  It is more expensive than some, but it performs perfectly and comes in about a dozen fun colors. If you are on a tight budget, a cheaper model would probably serve you just fine as long as it will measure in ounces and/or grams.

Cool Tools is a regular feature highlighting useful tools for fiber artists, especially those on a budget. Got an idea for something you would like to see featured? Post to the comments or email wooldurham@gmail.com.
